Before the negative effects of UV were widely known, it used to be that skin tanning was considered healthy. Recently, the advancement of science has revealed that bathing in UV light, especially UV-A rays, damages cells by destroying their DNA. Over-exposure to UV has been found to lead to photo-aging of the skin (age spots, wrinkles, sagging), skin cancer, and even diseases such as cataracts.
Ultraviolet light is made up of UV-A, UV-B and UV-C waves.
UV-A has a long wavelength and can reach the surface of the earth, even on a cloudy day. Unlike UV-B, it can also penetrate through glass and reach deep into the body. UV-C is unable to even reach the planet's surface. UV-A is also accumulated within the body and can still exert an influence after 10, or even 20 years.
While UV-A rays are present throughout the year, regardless of the season, in Japan UV-A is at its strongest through May until the end of August; however, it is only about half as strong during the winter months.
High rates of skin cancer in both Australia and America have been linked to over exposure to UV rays. However, it has been reported that by insisting our children wear sun-screen, hats and sunglasses every day from infancy to adulthood, we can reduce the occurrence of skin cancer by up to 80%.
Do you have sensitive skin? Concerned about spots or sunburn? When you leave the house you can wear sun cream, a hat, long gloves, sunglasses or even use a UV-blocking parasol. What about when you are riding in a car or relaxing in your room?
Recognition of the dangers related to UV exposure in cars is still relatively low. At home, you can use a curtain to block incoming light, but what if you want to let in some bright sunny weather?
Whether in your room or in your car, a well-placed UV cut film will allow you to enjoy the incoming daylight while staying protected.
Doctors worldwide strongly recommend protecting your children against the damage caused by UV exposure. Although strongest in the summer, harmful UV rays are present throughout the year, so act now to protect yourself and your family.
